However, the EcoBoost engines, at least the first few years suffered from carbon issues due to PCV routing.I've not been able to figure out definitively if this has been fixed? I know the 3.5 underwent a rework in 2017 but considering they knew about the issue several years prior that seems like a long time to go before making the fix.The 5.0 is probably the top engine on my list due to long-term viability and ease of repair.
I believe all Direct Injection engines suffer from carbon build-up, just the nature of their design which sends EGR gasses over the valves but the fuel is injected directly, past the valves, so the only way to eliminate the problem is to use 2 catch cans or one plus venting to air/Blow off valve, instead of EGR. However, they have made progress, most Direct Injected engines now using a more sophisticated timing system so that you only need a special valve cleaning about every 100k miles. Is it a problem? Does it matter? It does not matter.
Carbon build-up is just a bunch of FUD spread by guys selling top-end engine treatments. Diesels have never had fuel spraying the back side of the valves to keep them clean and neither have engines running on LP Gas or CNG whose fuel is never in liquid form at all by the time it reaches the intake.As to the viability and easy repair on the 5.0 I have no idea where you're getting that from. That engine debuted in 2011 just like the 3.5L Ecoboost. Apart from lack of turbos and DI there isn't anything less complicated about it. One could argue it's just as complex given that you have two extra cylinders and 8 more valves and an extra timing chain tensioner. Are you racing towing max loads on the daily or intending on keeping it 200k or more? Then this may be a concern but really its maintenance on par with what you would do for headgaskets at 100-150k miles on older cars.

If you are the type to buy newer and never keep them beyond 125-150k then the 5-10% MPG drop by that point is hardly worth it.If it really bothers you just install a mild methanol injection setup after your warranty is up. Don't do anything extreme and don't retune heavily.
You'll have a happy engine with a bit more getup and the methonal will keep the intake air-ways clean. The cost on a stage I kit installed is very close to what you would pay to have the topend taken apart and cleaned. Methanol injection is not a cleaner like you think. IMO people make a bigger deal out of it than it is. I've seen the videos, done the research and run hundreds in various techs to deal with it.
At the end of the day after all that the conclusions I came to are the ones I gave you. Take it with a grain of salt sure but I do own a 2015 2.0EB that has seen a fair amount of track time. I may be clueless but only when it comes to damn friction bearings so far.Now if you buy a brand new built this year, you may have dual injection, in which case this is all moot.
